Gilligan’s Island

April 24th, 2012

Guess where I went yesterday? I got to help chaperone Mrs. Kimoke’o's budding marine science students on a field trip to Kāne’ohe Bay, Moku o Lo’e… Coconut Island… Gilligan’s Island! The island once belonged to Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who planted dozens of coconut trees on the small island, giving it its coconut name. She threw a lavish lu’au on the island for her aunt, Queen Emma. Later, she sold the island the the Fleischman’s yeast heir, who turned it into a resort complete with salt water swimming pool and exotic wildlife, including an elephant, zebra, camel and chimpanzees! At WWII, the military took over, and after the war, the state got the island. It was transferred to UH to become the Hawaii Institute for Marine Biology (HIMB). Mrs. Kimoke’o, before returning to KS as a teacher, worked on the island as a marine scientist for a few years!

Here are some pictures from our outing.
